Chimpanzee population: Threats and Conservation

Chimp population  Overview :  T hreats and conservation  Written by   Uthman OYEBAMIJI  Chimpanzee source: SPL Did you know?  Chimpanzees have the largest geographical range in population of all the great apes. They range throughout the African equatorial belt from Senegal  in the west  to Tanzania  in the E ast ern-Africa .    Due to their high dependence on forest ecosystem wild chimpanzees  are not habituated to human presence.  And it is much  harder to know how many are in a given area.  Chimps make nest,  Instead of counting chimps, researchers sometimes count nests to get an estimate of chimpanzee abundance.  These sleeping nest s are built  every night and old ones are easy to find in the forest.  Surveys  of nests and other clues,  it is  believe d  that there are  about  175 to 300,000 chimpanzees left in the wild.  C himpanzees are divided into four different subspecies, which differ genetically and even behaviorally. The populations of some of these are very small. Some sci
