Two male lions have seriously injured a 24-year-old keeper at a north German zoo.

The 'experienced' keeper entered the predators' enclosure to feed them this morning at Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, a spokesman for police in Walsrode, 80 kilometres from the zoo, told DPA news agency.
Fellow keepers noticed the attack and pulled their colleague to safety who was then flown to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The park, which visitors drive through in their cars, contains more than 1,500 animals  that live on 120 hectares of land.
Elephants, leopards, giraffes, and macaques call the park home alongside a group of lions.
Since its foundation in 1974, the park has also worked to conserve endangered species. One of its most important achievements, according to the zoo's website, was the release of a White Rhinoceros bred in Europe back into the wild.
